To be fair, the sensible read is that Cameron and Curtis will return for pre-season and be judged by Rohl like the rest of the squad. Souttar seems to have been handed another year to be that steadying voice at the back while the club gradually phases out loans and out-of-contract short-term fixes. That doesn’t make him some flamboyant leader — his style is quieter — but plenty of managers value that calm consistency.
Souttar’s role: steady rather than showy
Fans sometimes expect the captain to roar and gesticulate, but leadership takes different forms. With Souttar you get reliability and organisation rather than pantomime. Whether he starts will be down to Rohl and to who we bring in during the window. If new signings arrive and push for places then Souttar’s role could become more of a senior deputy — still important, but not necessarily automatic every week.
Defence needs careful, measured rebuilding
We’ve been rejigging the backline for a while and you can’t just rip the whole thing up every season. Bringing in a couple of defenders to complement the core makes sense, particularly as loans and short-term stopgaps are wound down. It’s not glamorous work. It’s about shape, communication, and making sure replacements fit the system Rohl wants to play.
Patience, but not complacency
Yes, we’re hungry for trophies — who isn’t? But constant overreaction after a draw or a defeat is part of the problem. Building a squad capable of challenging consistently takes time and a bit of restraint from the stands. The new owners should be judged on setting up structures and sticking to them, adapting where needed, rather than knee-jerk changes. Criticise when it’s deserved, but let the process breathe. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and if we keep swapping out large chunks each season we’ll never reach the point where only small tweaks are required.
In short: don’t write Souttar off because he’s not theatrical, and don’t expect wholesale miracles overnight. Give Rohl the tools, and let the club rebuild sensibly.
