To get straight to the point: supporters moaning after the first few games doesn't decide a player's fate. The manager and the board do. If a signing is putting in the graft, you can expect them to be given a run of games to bed in. That's the reality, and while it might grate with some of us, it is what it is.
Why time on the pitch matters
Young or new players need rhythm and minutes. You can't judge their off the ball movement, understanding of the team's pressing shape or ability to read transitions from two substitute appearances. To be fair, first impressions count, but football's a game of patterns and relationships. Give them time and you get a better read on whether they're genuinely struggling or just rusty.
Criticism in the internet age
We all know technology has amplified every opinion. Social media, punditry and endless clips mean every mistake gets replayed until your phone vibrates. It is relentless. But it's not new that people pick apart players; pundits have been doing it for decades. The platform has changed, not the fact that scrutiny is part of the job.
How players and fans should handle it
Truth is, if you pick a career in football you accept a certain level of public judgement. Some players wear it as fuel. Others struggle with it. If someone is being paid well, as Storm said, they can use criticism as motivation to prove doubters wrong. For fans, patience is awkward but useful. Keep the support honest rather than hysterical. Back the lads when they show effort and let the manager and board make the tough calls on form and selection.
At the end of the day it's about balance. We can moan from the stands and the sofa, and we should. But remember who ultimately decides to give a player time to settle. That's on the people running the club and the man picking the team. If they're putting in the effort, they deserve a fair crack.
