There’s enough meat in this month’s Loan Watch to give you a proper picture of how our youngsters are faring away from Ibrox. Some are getting regular game time and learning the hard way, while others are still finding their feet. It’s early, but you can already see which players are getting useful senior experience and who needs more patience.
Getting minutes and growing in confidence
Alloa’s duo have been the most obvious beneficiaries so far. Kyle Glasgow is getting a lot of minutes and has found the net twice, which is exactly the sort of return you hope for from a young winger out on loan. Max Cameron’s appearance tally suggests he’s trusted to start regularly too, even if the goals haven’t come yet. Those minutes matter — they build match sharpness and teach the day-to-day grind you just don’t get on the training pitch.
Midfield prospects: steady steps, varied roles
Aiden McCallion and Lewis Stewart at Queen’s Park are getting a mix of starts and substitute outings. McCallion’s minutes are limited but he’s chipped in with an assist and even bagged a couple for the 19s back at Ibrox — good signs that he’s keeping sharp. Bailey Rice at Kilmarnock looks to be involved without grabbing headlines yet; these early senior minutes are about adaptation more than box scores.
Defenders and the defensive learning curve
Jack Wyllie at Forfar deserves a nod — three starts and a pair of clean sheets is a tidy return for a centre-back getting regular senior exposure. Oliver Hynd’s appearances for Cumbernauld Colts are noted, although minutes aren’t published, and Paul Nsio at St Mirren is putting in full games in a holding role. Defenders often need those repetitive minutes to develop reading of the game and communication under pressure.
There are a few who’ve only had cameo roles so far — Callum Burnside, Calum Adamson and Zebedee Lawson have seen limited minutes. That’s not unusual early in loans; some adapt straight away, others take longer. The important thing is that the pathway is working: lads are out getting tested, learning, and coming back better prepared for the next step.
Overall, nothing seismic yet but plenty to be optimistic about. These early weeks are about minutes and experience, and several of our youngsters are ticking those boxes.
