There’s nothing mystical about player trading — you buy low, sell high. When a youngster has a standout season you can expect interest and for the price to rise. That said, a bump in market value doesn’t mean Rangers should be trigger-happy. Context always matters.
The trade-off: sell high, keep the spine
Fans talk about fees and sell-on clauses because the club has to balance short-term profit with long-term competitiveness. We want the bank balance healthy, of course, but you also want a squad that can keep winning. Losing the wrong player for the sake of a headline fee can leave a hole that’s hard to plug quickly. It’s about timing as much as price — sell when it really benefits the club on and off the pitch.
One good season isn't a lifetime
We all get excited when a player really hits form. But form can be a tight window. Young lads can have a purple patch, or suit one system and then struggle elsewhere. That’s why I’m cautious about judging someone solely on a single campaign. You look for consistency, adaptability and signs they can step up if a bigger league calls. Appetite from buyers is natural, but the club needs to decide whether the player is part of the next title push or an asset to monetise.
Where that leaves Fernandez, Maswanhise and co.
Fernandez, Maswanhise and even Just are exactly the sorts of names fans debate — great moments, obvious potential, but questions about sustainability. I can see why Braga or others might pay more than current estimates, and there’s nothing wrong with that. The key is whether the fee reflects true value to Rangers now and in the near future. Personally I’d want assurances that any sale doesn’t leave us short where we still need quality. No drama, just sensible business and the odd bit of pride that we can develop players others want.
To be fair, I wasn’t making a big point in the thread — just asking if others view one-season form the same way I do. It’s a proper conversation for supporters and the board alike.
