Our Recruitment Problem and the Playmaker Need

There’s a simple point at the heart of this: recruitment feels blinkered. We can sign from anywhere, yet time and again the department seems to favour the Championship or familiar Scottish options. To be fair, those leagues produce players, but a pattern has emerged and it’s frustrating when the squad’s needs are clearer than ever.

Recruitment tunnel vision

You can see why scouts stick to what they know. The Championship is close, the players are proven in a physical league and Scottish talent is easier to monitor. Trouble is, that tunnel vision narrows the profile of player we bring in. We end up with a conveyor belt of similar signings rather than someone who answers a specific problem on the pitch.

Why a creator matters more than another defensive mid

The truth is we dominate possession in most games. When you have the ball as much as we do, the requirement shifts. Yes, you need balance and a capable defensive base, but what often decides tight matches is who can split the defence or score from midfield. A playmaker who can cut teams open or a goal-scoring midfielder would change the dynamics. Asking for another purely defensive midfielder feels like treating the symptom, not the disease.

Hearts hype and pressure

There’s always chatter about nicking the best of Hearts, but how often have they actually finished above us? Even if they do unearth talent, remember the different pressure here. Players who shine at a different club under lighter scrutiny don’t always take to the demands at Ibrox. A track record of youth development matters, but so does tempering that with the right personality and end product for Rangers.

Finally, players like McGregor get plaudits because they can pass, shoot and dictate when given time. That does not mean every similar-looking signing will replicate it. We need clearer profiles from recruitment: a creative midfielder with attacking output, not another body for the middle of the park.
