I don’t think it’s ridiculous to spend on someone we expect to be our Captain and a long-term mainstay. If the signing sends a message and gives the squad a leader, it can be worth the outlay — especially when you factor in how transfer values have shifted over time.

There’s been talk about historic fees when you adjust for inflation. The numbers people toss about aren’t fantasies: 12M for Flo in 2000 being likened to 26M in 2026, or 6.5M for Ball in 2001 equating to about 14M now — those comparisons show how the market has changed. You can argue about exact figures, but the point stands: what looked huge two decades ago is nearer today’s standard after you factor inflation and how football’s economy has grown.

Sell high, buy smart

If Rangers can start commanding 20/25M plus for our players then it changes the business model. We can make meaningful profits and reinvest in quality, keeping the squad competitive domestically and in Europe without relying on one-offs. I believe we’ll finish this window in profit and that this summer will see good sales figures — that’s not braggadocio, it’s pragmatic. You sell at the right time, you bring in better players, and you build sustainably.

Why investment matters

Truth is, success on the pitch needs investment. Paying for a player who’s going to be captain and a pillar of the team isn’t just about the transfer fee — it’s about leadership, consistency and the standards they set. The transfer record stood for over 25 years; markets move, and clubs that adapt usually profit. To be fair, fans want trophies and stability, and if spending smartly gets us there then I’m all for it.

Call it ambition. Call it necessary. Either way, if we want to close the gap and back our manager properly, you have to be willing to put the cash where it matters.
