Feels like Groundhog Day. Same twitchy transfer behaviour, the old in-and-out shuffle, and the same risk of a stuttering start to the season. If Martin is getting most of the blame, you can see why — constant turnover wrecks momentum and leaves the manager trying to glue a team together on the hoof.
Where we actually need reinforcements
Let's be clear: the squad has obvious gaps. Two right wingers, full-backs — I still think two right-backs would be sensible — a couple of centre-backs, a left-back and a creative or goalscoring midfielder. Now we've got talk of a midfield overhaul and Gassama possibly leaving, which tosses in the need for another left-wing option. Problem is, most of the names we hear linked are variants of what we already have. That doesn't feel like real progression.
Picking the sensible ones — and the cash route
Barron over Devlin for me every day. Younger, played better last season and looks like he can improve — clubs are interested, which tells you a lot. Devlin hasn't had that momentum, and there's always the injury question hanging over him. On Raskin, I'd be ruthless: take the cash, plain and simple. No swap deals. If the price is right, sell and spread that money across multiple positions, don't tie it up on a single marquee buy.
Players who need clarity, not chaos
Dio deserves a role and consistency. He's not helped by being shuffled around from game to game and then getting pinned as the problem when things go wrong. Aasgaard looks to me like a player who functions best around the box — goal threat, link-up play — but needs coaching on transitions and off-ball work. Keep him and refine his game. Bajrami might be a good player, but if he never gets a run in his preferred position maybe moving him on is best for both sides.
Style, signings and outlook
Watt's one season of form was under a particular system; it doesn't automatically translate under a different manager. And on Ferguson — I know it'll be an unpopular take — he doesn't suddenly become priceless because of the surname. If the fee asked is north of what we'd call sensible, walk away. We can't keep chasing headline buys and ignore stability. This transfer merry-go-round is the third iteration in three seasons. If the club wants progress, it needs a clearer model and fewer knee-jerk changes. Otherwise, to be frank, we look set for another tricky season.
