To be fair, the finances here are not as simple as 'owners throwing money in' or 'asset stripping'. There is a middle ground. If Thelwell's figures are to be believed, we've spent more than we recouped from sales and the shortfall has come from the owners, not some spare pot of cash. Once you add loan fees, wage contributions and exit costs, the transfer receipts start to look a lot smaller.
Counting the real cost
People keep quoting the roughly £10 million that was available under the previous regime, and that did help. But that headline number is not pure spending money. Loan fees for the likes of Aarons and Moore, plus paying parts of wages while players were out on loan, reduces what can be reinvested. Then there are the costs of parting ways with staff and managers. Sacking Martin, Thelwell and Stewart is not free. Those settlement figures come off the balance sheet and they matter when you are trying to rebuild a squad.
PSR, FFP and why sales happen
PSR and FFP are real constraints in Europe and we have not been immune. You cannot simply flood the club with cash without consequences, and that limits what the owners and executives can do. So yes, sales sometimes have to happen. Sometimes it is also down to squad shape — we have a glut in midfield and players need to be moved on before more signings make sense.
Not asset stripping, more messy rebuilding
If the intention was to strip assets the club would not be investing in stadium work or planning long term improvements. Repairs and expansion do not look like an owner taking everything he can and running. You can argue about timing and who decided what, and you can criticise choices made last summer, but calling it deliberate asset stripping misses the nuance. The more accurate take is this: the club has been managing a shortfall with owner support while juggling loan fees, wages, outdated sponsorship deals and the cost of resets. That is messy, frustrating and not particularly neat, but it is not the same as simply looting the place.
