Wider Areas Still Cause Concern

There’s a tidy line between being fearful and being realistic. Time’s running — the window is only nine days from now in the fan’s mind — and while we’ve got solid options through the middle and up front, the wide areas and a top-class centre-back are what keep me awake. To be fair, I trust the manager and the board, but it’s natural to be a bit nervous after last season’s awful start.

Back four: broadly okay, but improvements needed

Look at the spine: midfielders and forwards seem to have quality and depth. Our back four, as it stands, can do a job. But I’d still like to see a standout centre-back come in — someone who commands the area and gives real reassurance. Cover at left-back is another box that needs ticking. You can patch things, but signing a genuine leader at the back changes how the whole team feels about matches.

Wings are the big worry

Wide play is where the margin is thin. Maybe Antman turns a corner, maybe Curtis becomes the player everyone hopes for, and maybe Gassama settles and kicks on after a year here. That would be ideal. Reality, though, is you want at least one winger you can trust to hit double figures in goals and assists — someone who makes defenders worry every week. We keep hearing whispers of a big, wow signing. If that’s a winger, I’ll sleep easier.

Still a title chance — but timing matters

There’s a clear opportunity to push for the title. The opposition are not exactly busy in the window, and there are question marks over their squads too. I’m not pessimistic, just impatient. Transfers take time to bed in and chemistry doesn’t happen overnight. I trust the people in charge — I really do — but as a fan you want business done sooner rather than later.
