Good to get the three points, but let’s not pretend it was comfortable. To be fair the lads dug in when needed, but St. Mirren could easily have had four or five chances and that’s the worrying bit. A win is a win, but there are issues that need sorting sooner rather than later.

Defensive shape needs work

The back three of Pandur, Makhanya and Manny looked shaky at times and it’s not just nitpicking. There were moments where both Pandur and Makhanya chased out wide while Manny was dragged up the park, leaving space and inviting pressure. The big man can be a handful but he isn’t always decisive on the ball or quick to see the picture early enough. You could see why some would want Godfrey back as soon as he’s available—his presence would help calm that area down.

Bright spots — players pushing for places

Penrice was one of the positives for me. He looked lively and deserves praise for his performance. Rommens might find it hard to keep his shirt if this level continues from Penrice, but that competition is healthy. Vanja had good moments too; he looks cultured on the ball and his finish was a proper strike. I’ll admit I wondered if one of his loose passes contributed to the goal against us, but overall he showed quality.

Midfield surprise and small comforts

Biggest surprise was Chukwuani after the break. I hadn’t expected him to come alive like that in the second half. Playing him in the number 8 suited him — he drove at teams instead of sitting in front of the defence, and that directness caused problems. It’s the sort of flexibility we need from squad players.

So, a useful three points but plenty to fix. Defence and decision-making need addressing, while competition for places is a genuine plus. Not the prettiest afternoon, but there are things to build on.
