Ben Godfrey’s career reads like a series of near-misses. Plenty of pace, size and obvious athleticism, but interruptions and role changes have left supporters asking whether he’s ever been given the chance to become the player many expected.
Where the promise showed
At Norwich he looked like a defender on the up: raw, hungry and ready to stretch into the Premier League. You can see why fans recall that period fondly — the potential was obvious. Across his career the one constant fans praise is his physical profile. Recovery pace, strength in duels and the ability to cover ground fast are traits you simply can’t coach overnight.
Why it didn’t stick
Then the doubts creep in. The move away from that clear development path brought a string of different systems, positions and expectations. Centre-back one week, full-back the next. At times supporters point to poor positioning and decision-making, especially in loan spells where the scrutiny is harsher. Many reckon system fit and selection played a part at times, rather than a straight judgement on ability.
Can Rangers provide the stability?
That’s the big question. This isn’t a debate about ceiling. It’s about rhythm. To be fair, a player like him needs a settled role and a manager willing to build confidence and clarity around his responsibilities. If Rangers can give him a consistent platform, fewer surprises in selection and a clear tactical brief, you can imagine the upside returning. But if the pattern of stops and starts continues, we’ll be asking the same questions again.
Truth is, fans are split but cautious. Some see a gamble worth taking for the athleticism; others worry the inconsistency will persist. Either way, whoever’s in charge at Ibrox needs to manage him properly — and that means time, patience and a defined role.
